The Best Kind of Bug Collection

With spring thawing out the land and awakening insects, I have to admit that bugs are not one of my favorite topics. But Max Lucado's team of bug characters are another story altogether.

Based on Max Lucado's Hermie book series, children learn some valuable life lessons with the help of ladybugs, bees, caterpillars and other crawling critters. In the DVD set, A Bug Collection, Volume 3, children will learn the importance of prayer, the priority of using good manners and the futility of petty fighting with the help of some pretty cute bugs.

This film series would make a great addition to any library--public, church or home. And while your kids laugh and giggle over the antics of bugs, they'll learn about God and how he expects his children to live. Sometimes it helps to remove a child from their own world to see how their actions affect others and how they can behave better. As a parent, any reinforcement I can get from outside sources is a good thing.

And who wouldn't want to hang out for a few hours with these adorable critters?

If the bugs at my house were this cute, I'd roll out the welcome mat and build them houses of their own. If these tiny critters can learn a thing or two about prayer, getting along and manners, then so can your kids.

You can purchase this DVD collection directly from Thomas Nelson for $19.99 or from one of the following retailers:

All About Reading

Photobucket

Our household contains four student readers with two more yet to learn. My first four students learned at varying rates and with varying degrees of motivation. What clicked with my older children was just not working for my kindergarten student this year.

When I was given the opportunity to review the new curriculum, All About Reading (Level Pre-1), I was very excited to give my daughter a fresh program to help her on the way to reading while also introducing her younger sister to letters and sounds.

All About Reading was written by Marie Rippel. According to the All About Reading website:
Level Pre-1 [is] for preschoolers and kindergarteners, and it focuses on what we call the Big Five Skills. These five fundamental pre-reading skills include letter knowledge, phonological awareness, print awareness, listening comprehension, and motivation to read. It is this specific set of skills that helps pre-readers understand the basics of language and how it works, preparing them to learn to read. With All About Reading Level Pre-1, your child will play special games, enjoy little crafts, and engage in charming storytime activities--all the while absorbing these all-important Big Five Skills.
The curriculum sounded like exactly what my daughter needed--a program with a variety of fun activities to help target pre-reading skills and help provide a motivation to read. When the package arrived, I was not disappointed. Unwrapping the contents was like Christmas morning. Here's what greeted me:

Photobucket

Program components can all be purchased individually but the best value is to purchase either the Basic or Deluxe package. The All About Reading Basic package ($79.95) includes:
  • Teacher's Guide
  • Student Workbook
  • Capital Letter Alphabet Chart
  • Lowercase Letter Alphabet Chart
  • The Zigzag Reader (book for uppercase)
  • Lizard Lou (for lowercase)
  • Picture Cards and Letter Sound Cards for lesson activities
The Deluxe package ($119.95), pictured above, includes all the Basic items plus:
  • Activity Box & dividerscards (to picture/letter sound cards)
  • Ziggy Zebra puppet (extremely high quality from Folkmanus)
  • Letter Sounds A to Z (CD-ROM)
  • Tote bag to hold package contents
Audio CDs of both The Zigzag Reader and Lizard Lou can be purchased separately for $9.95 each. If you are teaching more than one student, additional student packet materials can also be purchased for $24.95 each.

If you'd like to take a peek inside the books, you can view samples of the following:
Teacher Guide
This program has one of the most user-friendly teacher guides I've ever used. It lists the program components and the craft supplies needed. It then has a very helpful explanation of the Big Five Skills related to pre-reading. Each individual lesson in the guide indicates the materials needed and gives a very clear step by step guide for teaching that particular lesson. Everything is completely spelled out--even offering a "script" of what the teacher says to the child.

There are so many wonderful little games and ideas included in the guide. Some elements are repeated (like singing the alphabet song) but other elements are rotated to keep the lessons fresh for the student. And there are also suggestions related to Read-Aloud Time sprinkled through the book--sometimes a list of suggested books or ways to incorporate reading aloud in unique ways (e.g. when you cook, read aloud the recipe).

The Teacher Guide also includes the following appendices:
  • hands-on activities to provide multiple ways for letter interaction
  • alphabet song tips (including an alternate tune that spaces out the letters better)
  • complete reference section if you'd like to further research reading instruction
  • index of topics
  • pages for teacher notes
Student Materials
The activity book comprises 78 lessons. Lessons 1-26 cover the capital letters and Lessons 27-52 cover lowercase. Each day you read to your child one short story from the appropriate reader (Zigzag Reader for capitals; Lizard Lou for lowercase). Both readers are also available as an audio CD. The student workbook has a coloring page with suggestions for doing more than just coloring. Some ideas to decorate the letters were to use rubber stamps, finger paint, or add crafty items like googly eyes (all optional--just use what you have on hand).

Some lessons use the Picture Cards and Letter Sound cards. Cards are printed on sturdy cardstock and come prescored for ease of separation). All the cards are labelled with the corresponding lesson number (very helpful if the cards accidentally get knocked out of the box!). The concept of rhyming words is introduced and the teacher's book explains different ways to use the cards (memory, matching, or which one is different). Parents are provided a list of other reinforcing activities and are encouraged to select one of these each day as well as spending 20 minutes daily reading to their child.

Starting with Lesson 53, the focus is on the learning the most common sound for each letter. Activities in this section also include some cutting and pasting. One fun addition to this final section is the "Tasty Alphabet Time" in which a snack is prepared to match the letter sound. So when learning the sound for "a" the student might enjoy apple slices or animal crackers. For letter "x" the student eats six of something.

The Letter Sounds A to Z CD-ROM is used for Lessons 53-78 and it's basically an interactive poster on your computer. It shows the images from the lowercase alphabet chart and when a letter is clicked, the sound is pronounced. The audio is very clearly enunciated and sounds like a real person, not a computer voice. A student can gain some computer mouse skills while reviewing letter sounds. You can also print off the chart which provides the student with his own mini-poster of the lowercase alphabet chart.

The lessons are short and sweet and with the very clear teacher guide, lessons can be done in 15-20 minutes plus the 20 minutes for reading aloud and you are done in much less than an hour. The variety of games and activities really make each day a fun surprise.

Our Experience
My six year old daughter used the program (her 4 year old sister often participated in the memory games or listening to The Zigzag Reader). The program is a complete program with everything all prepared for you. My daughter enjoyed the coloring pages and the Picture cards and the readers (that's pretty much everything that she loved). When we took out the reader for each new letter, my daughter always asked to start from the beginning of the book which helped serve as a great cumulative review of letters.

I personally love the graphics used on the poster and in the readers. The illustrations reminded me of vintage drawings from old school books--incredibly detailed and very realistic. It's nice to have a program with illustrations that aren't so childish that an older learner would be embarrassed by them. Sometimes a full-color production can be a visual distraction so I like that the illustrations are all in black and white.

Program Strengths
  • Very user-friendly teacher manual requiring little preparation
  • Student materials are simple and keep focus on letters
  • Short lessons for young attention spans
  • Beautiful readers reinforce letter learning (gorgeous illustrations!)
  • Audio CDs to accompany the books (helps child review material independently)
  • Game and craft suggestions that help cement what is learned
  • High quality materials
  • Having a tote bag to contain all the materials was a truly inspired idea!
I really cannot come up with anything we did not like about the program. This comprehensive program systematically teaches all letters and their sounds and uses games and word cards to work on the skills necessary to begin reading. My daughters loved using the cards for rhyming games and memory games and they of course LOVED the zebra puppet. Some of the games with Ziggy Zebra had my daughter laughing uproariously--the lessons were pure joy to her.

With such a variety of materials (teacher & student books, readers, audio and puppet), having the tote bag to store it all was marvelous. We can grab it to go in the car, and my daughter can follow along in her reader while listening to the audio CD as I drive. The tote ensures that everything stays together and helps keep the puppet safe, reserved just for our All About Reading lessons. That extra little touch of having a puppet really made lesson time extra special. I plan to purchase the next All About Reading level as soon as it becomes available (tentative date is June or July 2011).

KinderBach

Ever since her older brother started piano lessons last summer, my 6 year old daughter has been dying to learn as well. She has 4 siblings who could teach her piano but none are willing to (I've even offered to pay them). To say she was happy to do KinderBach would be a huge understatement. She was nearly jumping up and down with excitement. And her "tagalong" little sister (age 4) was just as thrilled.

So what exactly is KinderBach? According to their website:

The KinderBach curriculum is a proven teaching method which gives children a solid music foundation, aligned with the MENC National Standards for Pre-K,that can translate to any instrument. Basics are basics and KinderBach covers them using language children understand. Youngsters will learn music vocabulary, note reading, rhythm, physical technique, ‘do, re mi’ singing, listening skills and music composition plus the joy in making music.

Here's a great introduction to this innovative music program created by Karri Gregor:

Karri Gregor stars in each video. She is a bubbly teacher infusing enthusiasm, energy and lots of fun into each and every lesson. She clearly explains concepts, and repeats them so that everyone can follow along. I like how she speaks directly to the child as if they were in their own special music class with Ms. Gregor as their teacher. She is the perfect teacher for the targeted audience of 3-7 year olds.

Set in a background similar to Blues Clues, Ms. Gregor teaches each lesson with the help of some cartoon characters. The first friend we met was Frisco and his pet donkey Dody (who lives between the sets of 2 black keys). As the program progresses, more friends are introduced. Here are all of Frisco's friends, each representing a note on the piano:

To use the program, a keyboard is recommended. If you have a laptop that you can move to where you have a piano, that would work just as well. But you'll want the piano or keyboard in the same vicinity as your computer while you are watching the lessons. Activity pages are also an integral part of the program. The activity page may be a coloring sheet or it may be an exercise to go along with the lesson. Some of the first exercises involved learning to distinguish between high and low sounds on the piano, listening for loud and soft sounds, and identifying the correct number name for each finger. The program starts with very basic music concepts that even the youngest children can understand and slowly & systematically progresses through more advanced topics.

The entire program includes 60 lessons (10 lessons within each of 6 levels). The video segments are short and sweet--perfect for young attention spans. You might find your kids begging for more than one lesson at a time. We often watched more than one and then on subsequent days, we sometimes reviewed a previous one and then moved ahead one or two lessons. For a complete overview of the program, read over the scope and sequence of the curriculum. You'll see in detail what activities and skills are covered for each level.

Our Experience
We used the program on a desktop, a laptop and also tried it out on our internet channel through the Wii. Watching through the Wii provided the biggest viewing option. You'll want to either have all your activity sheets printed off before you start or be connected to a printer so you can print them off for the lessons. Each week has an introductory video that tells exactly what materials you will need for a lesson such a rhythm instrument (we just used two wooden spoons from the kitchen), crayons and sometimes scissors for the activity page.

Both my 4 and 6 year old daughters absolutely LOVED the program. When I would tell them it was time to do KinderBach, they would both come running and they always wanted to do more than one lesson. The coloring and lesson sheets were also a huge hit with both of them. No reading was required to learn and understand the lessons so this is a marvelous preschool option.

I think the program is an excellent introductory music course to not only provide a fabulous foundation in music but also help children transition into formal music lessons. KinderBach provides a very insightful article about the academic benefits of music instruction (piano in particular). Read all about how learning music can improve a child's skills in Reading, Writing, and Arithmetic.

Program Strengths:
  • Enthusiastic teacher
  • Creative lessons
  • Clear explanations
  • Excellent supporting materials to reinforce the lessons
  • Short lessons on one particular topic
  • Ability for child to work at their own pace or together as a group
  • Free two week trial
  • 30-Day Money Back Guarantee
The only suggestion I would have for improvement would be a way for the online video to be viewed at full screen for greater visibility.

Product Pricing
Remember that the first two weeks of lessons are free. If you'd like additional access to decide whether to purchase a membership, you can pay $5.99 for a one day pass. When you decide to purchase, you have a couple options: Subscribe to the course online for $19.99/month or $95.88/year ($7.99 each month).

Songbooks can also be purchased to be used at any time during the program. This is a great way to provide additional hands on music experience for your kids. Each songbook is $23.95 and includes a PDF songbook as well as an audio CD with demo and performance tracks. Listen to samples online by clicking the songbook titles below:

If you'd prefer to purchase the program on DVD (recommended for those with slower internet connection), individual levels can be purchased for $40.45. To save money, you can buy various levels together (information and pricing on various bundles can be viewed here). The DVD package includes the lesson, an audio CD as well as a CD with all the activity pages. For the best value, purchase the Bonus 1-6 Bundle which includes all 6 levels and all 4 songbooks for $222.88. Level 7 is scheduled to be released August 2011.

GoGo Kabongo

GoGo Kabongo is an online world created specifically for 4-7 year olds to help develop cognitive prerequisites for reading. Some of these skills include:
  • Attention and focus
  • Memory Skills
  • Processing
  • Planning
  • Visualization
  • Comprehension
The activities within the site won't seem like reading activities at all but they do target skills your child will need for reading. The world of GoGo Kabongo is made up of three "habitats." Each habitat has three different games to choose from. One habitat is Twister Top:

Within Twister Top, users can select Design-A-Door (reproducing a pattern), Desert Dash (hear and rehearse letter sounds to be found in a certain order), or Crazy Maze (direct a letter through a maze to spell a word).

Or a child can explore the habitat Laughter Lake:

At Laughter Lake, students can select Critter Sizer (discrimination of size), Scuba Dude (collecting items in a specific sequence), or Going Buggy (listen to a story and demonstrate comprehension by placing pictures into the scene when prompted).

A third habitat is called Galaxy Gardens:
In this habitat, the game choices are Photo Safari (find and photograph animals and help them find lost items), Rocket Racer (space adventure finding targeted letters), or Robo Bobo (puzzle activity). You can read a full description of all 9 games here.

Children will meet a host of interesting characters while using GoGo Kabongo. Their personalities are as colorful and unique as their appearance:
You can read a little about each character and their job description here. When beginning the program, children are directed to customize their own wacky avatar from a choice of various heads, torsos and legs. I was a bit disappointed with the torso selections; two of them had skull images which I didn't think appropriate for the target age of 4-7 years old.

As a child completes activities, he'll be given rewards such as a sticker to use in creating his own comic book or items to decorate their treehouse. After a child spends time on GoGo Kabongo, an e-mail is sent to the parent indicating what activities were done and what skills were reinforced.

Our Experience
We had some initial difficulty setting up my children's accounts but the company was extremely helpful in response. Margaret was able to walk me through the process over the phone. The program is in beta so some glitches are to be expected. The company seems very receptive to feedback and seems to genuinely be working toward ironing out the problems that arise.

Off and on we experienced some glitches with Robo Bobo and the Photo Safari. In the former, we were getting blank screens. In the latter game, sometimes the program scored an action incorrectly. Either it was scored incorrectly, or my son did not know what he was doing wrong. Some re-instruction or verbal hints would have been helpful. I e-mailed a representative and she said she would let the tech department know.

We had three children trying GoGo Kabongo. My 8 year old son, although already reading, enjoyed the site and used it with the most skill. He was a bit frustrated when some of the games didn't quite work but managed to jump over to other activities when that happened.

My 6 year old daughter also enjoyed the program. I appreciated the feedback by e-mail on the levels each child had worked through and how they were progressing. Occasionally, the reward options weren't showing so you'd hear a prompt to select a reward but nothing was visible--that was mildly annoying to my daughter.

I also had my 4 year old daughter try using GoGo Kabongo but with very limited computer experience, she was not able to do things independently. With the help of a sibling or parent, she did enjoy selecting her avatar and wanted others to play games for her so she could watch. More computer savvy 4-year olds could undoubtedly use the program quite successfully. I was pleased that rewards were given at very early stages so even the youngest user can feel a sense of accomplishment almost immediately.

From a parent's perspective, I wish there were a way to turn off the music without losing the narration. Something to consider in further development. While children are in the treehouse (sort of an "entryway" to the game), the Duffy character kind of chatters on and tells jokes and makes small talk. My teen noticed that one joke that got cycled through was about vampires and werewolves. I guess I would prefer that the conversation of characters be more age appropriate (actually we avoid that subject for all ages in our household).

Aside from those few suggestions for improvement, the program was definitely enjoyed by my children and the activities served a cognitive purpose without boring the user. GoGo Kabongo has compiled a very thorough Learning Skills Chart so parents can know exactly what skills are targeted. We used the game as a reward after finishing other school work.

Program Strengths
  • Kid friendly
  • Bright & colorful
  • Imaginative characters & customizable avatars
  • Parent communication
  • Rewards available right away
  • Fosters cognitive development in a fun way
Program Improvements
  • Age appropriate humor
  • Skip the skeleton-inspired clothing choices
  • Provide a way to turn off the music but keep narration
Try it Free
New users can register and try out one of three demo games here. Registered users have access to one free habitat. Being able to try part of the program free is a wonderful way for parents and children to benefit from the program and decide whether it meets their expectations. You can purchase an additional habitat for $4.95/month per child. System requirements are spelled out here.

Zeezok Publishing

Have you ever thought about using movies to enhance your studies but maybe weren't sure how to go about it? Zeezok Publishing offers an extensive array of "z-guides to the Movies." The z-guide is basically a unit study based on a movie that incorporates ten activities to help not only bring history alive but encourage students to think critically.

You can view a complete list of Zeezok's z-guides to the Movies on their website. We had the opportunity to review the z-guide for Les Miserables. Zeezok specifies the exact movie version that coordinates with their guides. In our case, the guide corresponded with the movie starring Liam Neeson (which we already owned):

The z-guides are sold as either an e-book or CD format and retail for $12.99 each. Each z-guide contains a topic overview, movie synopsis and ten learning activities. The activities in our particular guide included:
  1. Movie Review Questions
  2. Psychological analysis of a character
  3. Random Acts of Kindness (identify acts in movie and then plan your own)
  4. Analyzing Parental decisions/influence on character
  5. Historical Study on the city of Vigau in 19th Century France
  6. Activity about what you would have done if you were a particular character
  7. Crossword puzzle
  8. Art activity creating a "Wanted" poster
  9. Worldview examination
  10. Studying the Filmaker's Art (covering Theme, Foreshadowing and Irony)
The study guide finished off with a Family Discussion guide. Answers are provided for the applicable activities (answers were very helpful as my son had some questions that he wasn't certain of the answer). We viewed this study as an enrichment activity so I allowed him to just look up the answer when he was stumped. I wanted him to benefit from the insights he would gain.

Our Experience
My son said he enjoyed the study. His favorite activity was the psychological analysis. This was a very welcome break from his traditional text and workbook courses. The exercises really targeted every learning style so that every student should be able to find something they enjoy in the z-guide.

I really liked how the z-guide helped students evaluate a character's worldview and then understand how that affected his or her actions. Now that my son has watched the movie and spent time learning about its historical background, the book will make a lot more sense and I'll encourage him to round off our study of the Les Miserables z-guide by reading the book. Which then leads to a great discussion on how the book differs from the movie.

I think the z-guides are helpful on many levels. You could use the z-guides as a way to bring some meaty discussion to a family fun night watching a classic film. Let family members take turns selecting a z-guide each month and then read through the book as a family over the course of that month. The study could also be an independent study for a student who enjoys films. Use z-guides when life circumstances make traditional seat work impossible or inconvenient (e.g. take one along on a vacation or an extended visit helping a sick relative). Use z-guides over the summer to fend off student boredom. But don't think you have to be in school to enjoy the z-guides. These are great guides for any learner who wants to dig in and study some great films.

Overall we give this product 5 out of 5 stars and look forward to exploring other titles in the z-guide line. Zeezok sells some movie titles through their website; other titles may be found at your local library, through Netflix or Amazon Video on Demand.

You can read what others think about z-guides when you visit TOS Homeschool Crew Blog. Reviewers were able to select their preference of movie.
